Driver’s Licence – Renewals

Renewal of your Operator’s License

Driver’s licenses are valid for one to five years, depending on factors such as your license class, medical status, and age. It is illegal to drive with an expired driver’s license. There are three options for renewing your driver’s license.

Option 1: In-person Renewal

To renew your driver’s license, you must bring your existing driver license to our registry office.

A complete medical report from your doctor is required for:

Drivers with a medical condition (Condition Code C)
Driver who is 75 years of age or older
Holders of Class 1, 2 and 4 licenses

If your driver’s license is already expired, you will need to provide proof of legal entitlement to be in Canada (Canadian birth certificate, passport, etc.) as well as proof of your residency in Alberta (Utility bills, residential lease agreement, etc.). Refer to this page for more information.

If it expired more than 3 years ago, you will need to pass the written and road tests before a new driver’s licence will be issued.

Option 2: Online Renewal

Renew your driver’s licence online. You will receive your new driver’s licence card in the mail in approximately 10-14 days. Terms and conditions apply. Please ensure you met all requirements prior to renewing online.

Class 3, 5, 6, and 7 driver’s licenses are eligible for online renewal. The online service is available only if your driver’s license is not expired and you are renewing it without any changes. If your licence is expired or you need to update your license (e.g., a name or address change), you must renew it in person.

To renew your driver’s license online, you must have a verified Alberta.ca account. If you don’t already have one, please allow 10 business days for your activation code to arrive by mail after signing up. Once you receive the code, complete your verification before proceeding with the online renewal.

Option 3: Remote Application

If you require a new driver’s licence and you are unable to attend a registry agent in person because you are either temporarily outside of Alberta or are medically homebound, you can apply for a new licence. Please refer to the link below for more information.
