Personalized Licence Plate
Alberta residents may purchase personalized license plates with configurations of their choosing, subject to certain restrictions.
Personalized plate can only be ordered in person and it is different than the other specialty plate (Calgary Flames, support the troops and veteran). A personalized plate cannot be requested for dealer, antique, consular corps or disabled plates.
Your plate must follow these guidelines:

All personalized license plate configurations must adhere to Government of Alberta standards. The following content is prohibited:
To prevent confusion, certain letter-number substitutions are not permitted. These include:
- Number 1 for letters I or L
- Number 5 for letter S
- Number 2 for letter Z
- Number 0 for letter Q
- Number 8 for letter B
- Number 3 for letter E
- Number 4 for letter A
How to order
You must bring your Alberta driver’s license and visit our office in person to place your order. Please review the guidelines before selecting your configuration. The cost is $220.00
Personalized plates are issued on a first come, first served basis. Plate configurations cannot be reserved.
Transferring and Changing a Personalized Plate
Within the first 90 days after placing your order, you may request a change to your personalized plate to:

Once a personalized licence plate is issued, there are no additional fees to retain the special plate. You only pay the standard vehicle registration renewal fee.
The Registrar of Motor Vehicle Services is authorized to refuse to issue, or recall at any time, any licence plate configuration that is considered inappropriate for a government-issued licence plate. If your plate is denied and you wish to have the decision reconsidered, you may contact Motor Vehicles Services in writing to the attention of the Assistant Director Motor Vehicles at sa.motorvehicles@gov.ab.ca.
