How to get an Alberta Driver’s Licence

In Alberta, it takes at least 3 years to obtain a full, non-GDL Class 5 Driver’s Licence. Find out about the steps to get licensed and the different types of licences required to drive various vehicles legally.

Stage 1: Class 7 Learner’s Licence
To obtain your Class 7 learner’s licence, you must:
- Be 14 years of age or older.
- Obtain parental or guardian consent if you are under 18.
- Pass a class 7 knowledge test
- Pass a vision test
A Class 7 learner’s licence allows you to drive:
- A moped independently.
- A Class 5 or Class 6 vehicle with an accompanying driver who is over 18 and holds a full Class 5 driver’s licence. They must sit in the front passenger seat.
Restrictions for Class 7 learners:
- You cannot drive between 12:00 AM and 5:00 AM.
- You must maintain a 0% blood alcohol level while driving.
- You cannot carry more passengers than there are seat belts in your vehicle.
- You are allowed a maximum of 8 demerit points before facing a licence suspension.
Steps to obtain your Class 7 learner’s licence:
- Study the driver’s guide
- Take the knowledge test at our registry office (no appointment necessary).
- Ensure you bring all required Identification and residency documents
- Pass a vision test (bring corrective lenses if needed).
If you successfully pass both the knowledge and vision tests, you will be able to purchase a Class 7 learner’s licence card. You will receive a temporary licence valid for 30 days, and your physical licence card will be mailed to the address provided within 21 days.

Stage 2: Class 5 Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL)
To obtain a probationary Class 5 Graduated Driver’s Licence (GDL), you must:
- Hold a Class 7 learner’s licence with at least one year of driving experience.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- If you’re under 18, you must have written consent from your parent or guardian.
- Provide acceptable identification and meet residency requirements, including:
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Canadian Residency
- Proof of Alberta Residency
- Pass a Class 5 road test.
- Pass a vision test.
A Class 5 licence allows you to drive the following vehicles:
- A 2-axle single motor vehicle
- A motorhome without air brakes (unless you hold an air brake certificate).
- Tow a trailer with one or more axles (if the trailer is not equipped with air brakes).
- A moped, recreational vehicle, or any combination of recreational vehicles and a trailer (if the trailer has 2 axles or less and isn’t equipped with air brakes).
To upgrade to a full Class 5 licence, you must hold a Class 5 GDL for 2 years with no suspensions in the last year.
While driving with a Class 5-GDL licence, the following rules apply:
- You cannot carry more passengers than there are seat belts.
- Your GDL licence will be suspended if you accumulate 8 demerit points.
- Your blood alcohol level must be 0% while driving.
- You cannot upgrade to a Class 1, 2, 3, or 4 licence.
- You cannot serve as the accompanying driver for a learner.
Steps to obtain your Class 5 GDL licence:
- Book a road test online or in person at our registry office
- Review the confirmation email to ensure you meet all requirements, including:
- Eligibility
- Vehicle requirements
- Required documents
- Fees and cancellation/no-show policies
- Arrive at the registry office at least 15-30 minutes prior to your appointment
- Bring valid vehicle registration and proof of insurance (Pink card).
- Pass your road test
- Pass a vision test
Upon successfully passing both tests, you can purchase your Class 5 GDL licence card. You will receive a temporary licence valid for 30 days, and your physical licence card will be mailed to the address provided within 21 days.
If your physical licence does not arrive within 21 days, please call the number on the back of your temporary licence for assistance. Report any missing licence to our office within 60 days of applying to avoid replacement fees (you will need to return your interim licence as well). Once you receive your official licence card, please dispose of the interim licence.
Stage 3: Class 5 Full Licence (Non-GDL)
Starting April 1, 2023:
Drivers are no longer required to take the advanced road test to exit the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.
All drivers who meet the following criteria are eligible to exit the GDL program:
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Must have completed 24 months of probationary driving as a Class 5 GDL driver. Drivers may be eligible to reduce this period by up to 6 months by completing a Class 5 or Class 6 driver training program from a school licensed by the Government of Alberta.
- Must be suspension and demerit-free for the last 12 months.
- Provide acceptable identification and meet residency requirements, including:
- Proof of Identity
- Proof of Canadian Residency
- Proof of Alberta Residency
