Driver’s Knowledge Test

General Information

Knowledge tests assess your knowledge of Alberta’s traffic laws.

Knowledge tests are conducted for:

All driver’s licence classes with the exception of class 5 
​Class 1, 2, 3, 4 commercial license
Class 7 learner’s license
Class 6 driver license
The air brake endorsement
The Safety Fitness Certificate (SFC) Compliance test

General Rules and Guidelines

No appointment is necessary to take the knowledge tests.  All knowledge tests are computer based.

The Class 7 Test is available at test stations with audio-assistant devices that read the questions and answer choices aloud through headphones. Headphones are not provided by the office, so you will need to bring your own. Please ensure that your headphones have a physical jack, as wireless connections are not supported.

If you have difficulty with English and need minimal assistance, you may use a paper English conversion dictionary during the test.

Important Information

The cost to take a knowledge test is $17.00
The test consists of 30 multiple choice questions and you must score a minimum of 25 to pass
If you fail the test you must wait one day before taking the test again. You may take the test as many times as required to pass but only once per day
Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, air brake and SFC knowledge tests can only be taken in English
Once a knowledge test has been passed and the test permit is validated by a registry agent, the permit is only valid for 1 year from the date of the test

Required Identifications and Documents

You will need to provide acceptable identification and proof of residency documents to take the knowledge test. ​One from each category must be provided as stated below. Please refer to this page for more information.

For clients under the age of 18 years old, consent of parents/legal guardians is required.
