Driver’s Licence – Renewals
Renewal of your Operator’s License

Driver’s licenses are valid for one to five years, depending on factors such as your license class, medical status, and age. It is illegal to drive with an expired driver’s license. There are three options for renewing your driver’s license.
Important Notice – Driver’s Licence & ID Card Services
Alberta is modernizing its driver’s licences and identification cards with enhanced security features, providing stronger protection against identity fraud and simpler access to government services.
As part of this province-wide upgrade, the Motor Vehicles System will be undergoing scheduled maintenance beginning June 28, 2026 at 6:30 PM. During this time, all driver’s licence and identification card services (both online and in-person) will be temporarily unavailable until July 2, 2026.
Learn more by visiting the Government of Alberta website.
Option 1: In-person Renewal
To renew your driver’s license, you must bring your existing driver license to our registry office.
A complete medical report from your doctor is required for:
Important Notice: New Alberta Driver’s Licence & ID Cards — Effective July 2, 2026
Alberta has launched a new integrated driver’s licence and ID card that now includes your Personal Health Number and a citizenship marker. To complete your licence or ID card transaction, please bring the following with you:
1. Your Alberta Health Care card — either your physical paper card (which will be surrendered) or your mobile health card displayed in the Alberta Wallet app. Please note: photos or photocopies of your health card cannot be accepted.
2. Proof of Canadian citizenship or legal entitlement to be in Canada — such as a Canadian birth certificate, valid Canadian passport, citizenship certificate, or Permanent Resident card.
These documents are required the first time you obtain or renew a driver’s licence or ID card after July 2, 2026. For the latest information, please refer to the Government of Alberta website.
If your driver’s licence has been expired for over three years, you must pass both the written and road tests to obtain a new one.
Option 2: Online Renewal
Online renewal will be unavailable starting June 28, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. until further notice
Renew your driver’s licence online. You will receive your new driver’s licence card in the mail in approximately 10-14 days. Terms and conditions apply. Please ensure you met all requirements prior to renewing online.
Class 3, 5, 6, and 7 driver’s licenses are eligible for online renewal. The online service is available only if your driver’s license is not expired and you are renewing it without any changes. If your licence is expired or you need to update your license (e.g., a name or address change), you must renew it in person.
To renew your driver’s license online, you must have a verified Alberta.ca account. If you don’t already have one, please allow 10 business days for your activation code to arrive by mail after signing up. Once you receive the code, complete your verification before proceeding with the online renewal.
Option 3: Remote Application
If you require a new driver’s licence and you are unable to attend a registry agent in person because you are either temporarily outside of Alberta or are medically homebound, you can apply for a new licence. Please refer to the link below for more information.
